China Pins Economic Hopes on Nationwide AI Push to Boost Jobs

Key Points

  • IMF estimates AI may impact about 40% of global jobs
  • China is pushing nationwide AI adoption across industries
  • 12.7 million graduates entering the job market in 2026
  • Government targeting 12 million new urban jobs this year
  • AI is expected to boost productivity and new digital industries

China is accelerating a society-wide push to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) as policymakers look to stimulate economic growth and support employment across multiple sectors.

The initiative was highlighted during China’s annual parliamentary meetings, where officials emphasized AI’s potential to create new industries and expand job opportunities.

A key focus is addressing the surge of 12.7 million university graduates expected to enter the workforce in 2026, the largest cohort on record.

At the same time, China aims to create around 12 million new urban jobs this year, supported by training programs, internships, and technology-driven industries such as the digital economy and generative AI.

Globally, organizations like the International Monetary Fund estimate that AI could affect nearly 40% of jobs worldwide, though policymakers in China argue the technology will ultimately generate new opportunities and productivity gains.
