According to official figures, total retail sales of consumer goods reached 43.8 trillion yuan ($6.1 trillion) in 2025, up 4.7% year-on-year, reflecting stable demand in both urban and rural areas. Digital consumption was a major driver: online retail sales accounted for nearly 16 trillion yuan, representing more than 36% of total retail sales.
During the Spring Festival holiday—typically a peak spending period—consumer spending increased by an estimated 8.5% compared with the previous year, with strong performances in dining, travel, entertainment, and specialty goods sectors.
