China’s consumer market continues to show resilience as retail spending and overall consumption grow into 2026, supported by holiday demand and expanding digital purchases.

According to official figures, total retail sales of consumer goods reached 43.8 trillion yuan ($6.1 trillion) in 2025, up 4.7% year-on-year, reflecting stable demand in both urban and rural areas. Digital consumption was a major driver: online retail sales accounted for nearly 16 trillion yuan, representing more than 36% of total retail sales

During the Spring Festival holiday—typically a peak spending period—consumer spending increased by an estimated 8.5% compared with the previous year, with strong performances in dining, travel, entertainment, and specialty goods sectors.
